I was talking with a friend a few days ago who asked me the question, "Would you recommend adopting?" I am assuming she meant because of the country that we chose. I didn't have a good answer at the time, but have been thinking of the question ever since.
Recommend.
That is a hard word. A wise friend cautioned me from ever "over simplifying" adoptions. They are hard, especially from the country that we chose. But now that I have had time to think, my answer would be that I would recommend it to those already interested in adopting. However, I would also recommend natural childbirth to those who are pregnant. I have done both (adopted and natural birth), neither can be done without a serious commitment and determination. However, one you can opt out of at anytime and there are no consequences, the other has disastrous consequences if you choose down the road that "this isn't for you."
I wish everyone would adopt. There are too many children out there that need families. However, I know that not everyone is prepared or has enough faith to accept the challenge, nor do I think that people should try if they don't really feel called to do so. So I guess this answer is probably no better than the one I gave the other night :-)
Bottom line: I would recommend adopting from Africa as much as I would recommend natural childbirth...take it for what it's worth!
Although you must know...the "Freds" are proving much harder than I thought to get rid of :-)

I always say, "you should do what God calls you to do." It's safe.
